Walter Chan, MD, MPH, FACG, is the Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Motility and Director of Clinical Research Education at the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is also Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He completed medical school and residency training in internal medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, followed by gastroenterology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He received his MPH in clinical effectiveness from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is a gastroenterologist with clinical and research focus in esophageal and gastrointestinal motility disorders. Dr. Chan currently directs the Gastrointestinal Motility and Physiology Laboratory, located in the Endoscopy Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital. His main clinical research interests center around gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its extraesophageal manifestations, such as pulmonary complications, lung transplantation outcomes, and laryngopharyngeal relfux. He is also actively engaged in studies in the diagnosis and management of eosinophilic esophagitis, gastrointestinal dysmotility, disorders of gut-brain interaction, and anorectal/pelvic floor dysfunction. Dr. Chan is currently the chair of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Subcommittee of the ACG Practice Parameter Committee.
