Benjamin McDonald, MD, PhD, is a Coggeshall Instructor of Medicine in the Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the University of Chicago. Dr. McDonald completed the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP; PhD in immunology) at the University of Chicago and was awarded the Committee on Immunology’s award for best dissertation. He continued his training at the University of Chicago as part of the Physician Scientist Development Program (PSDP; post-doctoral work in human immunology), where he completed both internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship training. He is now using his medical and scientific expertise to perform translational research in addition to his clinical duties. His research is focused on understanding an early, asymptomatic stage of perianal Crohn’s disease -- termed subclinical perianal Crohn’s disease. He uses perianal ultrasound (pUS) and MRI to identify patients with subclinical perianal Crohn’s disease and is working to better characterize clinical, immunological, and microbial factors associated with the disease.
