Kavita R. Kongara, MD, is Clinical Chair of Motility, United Digestive and Georgia Physician Executive Board Member of Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates. She often evaluates patients with complex upper and lower GI motility issues but is also busy in general GI practice. She is a graduate of the accelerated combined 6-year Bachelor’s and MD program at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. She completed her internship and residency at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in New York where she was mentored by Dr. William Chey who helped to spark her interest in entering the field of Gastroenterology. During her fellowship in gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, Dr. Kongara trained with nationally recognized experts in gastroesophageal reflux disease and colorectal diseases, as well as gastrointestinal issues more commonly associated with women’s health such as pelvic floor dysfunction and IBS. She also completed motility training in the evaluation and of patients with complicated functional bowel disorders and learned to interpret upper and lower manometry studies. After completing her GI fellowship, she became a faculty member at Winthrop University Hospital in Long Island, New York where she eventually became the Vice Chair of Gastroenterology and Director of the GI Motility Center and worked there for the first 10 years of her career. During her time as a faculty member, she became an Associate Professor of gastroenterology at SUNY Stony Brook and enjoyed mentoring residents and training GI fellows at Winthrop Hospital where she was also involved in clinical research. Dr. Kongara has become recognized nationally for her expertise and enjoys lecturing frequently in both local and national venues sharing her unique combination of academic and private practice experience for over twenty five years.
