Guadalupe Garcia-Tsao, MD, FACG, is Professor of Internal Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. She is also Associate Editor for the New England Journal of Medicine. She was the President of AASLD in 2012. Dr. Garcia-Tsao earned her medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autόnoma de México in Mexico City and completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición in Mexico City. She completed training in Hepatology at Yale University and joined its faculty in 1989. Dr. Garcia-Tsao’s research has been mainly patient-oriented in the area of cirrhosis. She has published over 200 scientific papers, chapters, and reviews, with an H-index of 115. Dr. Garcia-Tsao’s research has been mainly in the area of the cirrhosis, its staging and complications including varices, variceal hemorrhage, ascites, and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. She was part of the research teams that established the concept of clinically-significant portal hypertension as the main predictor of cirrhosis decompensation. She has been a member of various international consensus conference teams that have established current standards in the treatment of cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and its complications. She is the recipient of the Yale Humanism in Medicine Award, the s an elected member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, ACG, and AASLD. She has received the International Recognition Award from the European Association for the Study of the Liver, the Distinguished Clinician Educator and Mentor Award from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the American Liver Foundation, and the International Distinguished Educator and Mentor Award from the Latin American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
