Norio Fukami, MD, FACG, is currently professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic Arizona and Director of therapeutic endoscopy and Interventional Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Fellowship. He graduated Kyusyu University, Fukuoka, Japan and underwent postgraduate training both in Japan and in the U.S. for 9 years. In the United States, he underwent internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Medical Center, NY, and GI fellowship at the University of Texas, Houston - MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Fukami returned to Japan at Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital in Japan in 2001 working with Prof. Kudo and Prof. Inoue. Then, he returned to MD Anderson Cancer Center, TX in 2004. He continued his career at University of Colorado in 2006 to actively engage in the academic practice of therapeutic endoscopy, and was later promoted to Professor of medicine in 2015. He began his current position at Mayo Clinic Arizona in late 2015. Dr. Fukami has been actively involved in the ASGE and served on the International Membership Committee, Assessment and Certification Task Force, Standards of Practice Committee, IT&T Committee, and Advanced Endoscopy Training Committee, and has served many ASGE courses as an educator and a director. He is a past chair of ASGE ESD special interest group. Dr. Fukami served past courses at ACG meetings. He also serves as a member of the International Committee for Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society. He has authored many peer-reviewed papers, editorials, invited articles, and book chapters on therapeutic endoscopy including EUS, ERCP, and luminal interventions. Dr. Fukami is an editor for the first English textbook on ESD. He was honored at the State Capital of Colorado to receive recognition for the excellence in cancer care with advanced endoscopic treatment in 2010, and he received the Master of Endoscopy Award from ASGE in 2018.
