Lavanya Viswanathan, MD, MS, FACG, received her undergraduate education at the University of Maryland, College Park, her Master’s degree in Complementary and Alternative Medicine at Georgetown University and her medical training at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). She went on to complete her Internal Medicine military residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, and her GI fellowship at Augusta University Medical Center (formerly MCG) in Augusta, GA. She has authored several book chapters and peer-reviewed publications, with an emphasis on Disorders of Brain-Gut Interaction and Motility disorders. Most recently, she has published the first textbook on Onconeurogastroenterology, which addresses motility concerns in the cancer population. She served as Chief of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at David Grant Medical Center in California, where she built a pan-gut motility lab and completed her military service with an outgoing Active Duty rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Air Force, and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her distinguished service record. At present, Dr. Viswanathan is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she focuses primarily on patients with lower motility issues. She serves as a GI manuscript reviewer for Annals of Internal Medicine and co-editor for the Annals of Internal Medicine "Fresh Look" monthly publication. In addition to clinical medicine, she is passionate about mentorship and leadership activities. She serves on the ACG Women in GI, Educational Affairs, and Legislative and Public Policy committees.
